CPMD Summary: Starting from the desire to develop new ways of teaching, speaking and listening skills, this project developed an Egyptian myth from a literary textbook into the basis for a film-making project that combined storytelling, history, art and craft and animation. It included video-use CPD for teachers, student research into ancient Egypt and creation of costumes and props for the film, scriptwriting and recorded story telling, composition and playing of original music for the soundtrack, conception and creation of animated sequences while learning animation techniques and camera use, and the recording of live action sequences using green screen technology.

Project Description

Practitioners Kayla Parker and Stuart Moore from Sundog Media partnered with the school to make News Flash: Osiris with the 60 Year 5 pupils aged 9 and 10 years. The project took place in February and March 2005 at the school, resulting in a DVD title, and using a range of story-telling skills such as dramatic reconstruction and narration, and film-making techniques from animation to live-action. During the project, the children also became experts on mummification. The animation of the embalming process was a popular activity - especially the sculpting in plasticine of Osiris' heart, lungs, stomach and brains!

Project Aims

Objectives: Goals were: to examine ways in which to instill creativity across the curriculum, how creative processes might be used to look at issues of literacy, exposing young people to an art form they have never encountered, and working with teachers around creative use of ICT.

Future: The school has learnt new uses for ICT. They have experimented with raising attainment through creative process and have been able to purchase ICT equipment that they would not have done without this process.

Summary: Ancient Egyptian history was taught through television techniques, animation and costumes as pupils of Glen Park Primary School created News Flash: Osiris and a weather report fit for the banks of the Nile, in a partnerships with Plymouth film-makers Sundog Media.
