The big library spring clean at East Tilbury Infant School
Children at East Tilbury Infant School have been doing a spot of spring cleaning as they tackle the school library which is in need of a little loving care.
After the Spring Clean, the books will be freed from a cramped corridor where it was difficult and frustrating to find the right book. When a book can't be found it doesn't get read!
All the books from the school library will be spread out all over the school hall for a day...exploded into a new shape for everyone to see them in a new way.
Working with Royal Opera House Creative Partnerships practitioner, storyteller Mike Dodsworth, the children and teachers will take a voyage of discovery as they re-classify and re-categorise the books into smaller collections based on their findings, questions and observations.
Parents and carers will be invited in after school to get involved with the work and the books will finally be transferred to their new homes: all the classrooms of the school. In this innovative approach, an Exploded Library, each classroom will house a category until suitable premises for a new library has been finalised. By being the custodians of their own collection, each class can begin to re-engage with books in a variety of exciting ways.
How to "lend" their books to each other from class to class will be the next challenge in the Royal Opera House Creative Partnerships Exploding the Library project. The school will become a series of smaller libraries circulating books to each other making sure that all users and readers (staff and children) have ready access to any type of book that they want.
