North West London Productions - Film Crew
North West Film Productions, a film crew established by Media Studies students from Queens Park Community School, have secured their first commission after just two weeks.
As part of a Creative Partnerships London West project, the Year 10 students received training from industry experts with BBC experience and developed the skills needed to run an independent video production company and make it in the media.
Given a first task of creating a lunchtime news bulletin, complete with weather reports and two on location broadcasts, from the very beginning it was totally hands on, with the students needing excellent teamwork skills to meet each challenge.
Using industry standard kit and being treated as a real-life crew from day one meant they could rise to the challenge when they gained their first commission. They were engaged to create a promotional video to support a sixth form Young Enterprise project. The film was so successful that it helped the Young Enterprise team win the Innovation Award and the Overall Young Entrepreneurs Award 2008.
Barrie Birch Deputy Headmaster Queens Park Community School said: “The value of the training received and experience offered goes so much further than just the literal operation of the equipment. A definite shift in attitude and motivation was observed over the 12 weeks. There was a visible strengthening of team spirit and personal responsibility to deliver the very best”.
The film crew’s skills will be passed on to new groups of students through after-school meetings and summer editing workshops. Further commissions are being actively sought from local businesses and nearby residents.
