Enquiry Question

Exploring how to engage children in creative enterprise

Programme

Carr Green is an Enquiry School working with CapeUK on the Creative Partnerships Programme, the young people in Year 5 and 6 will develop skills, knowledge and practical experience to research, design, create textile products.

The programme is supported by Textile Designer, Helen Dalton who says; "This has been an incredibly rewarding experience for me as an artist. It has been a real privilege to work with the students at Carr Green who have been eager to learn new creative ways of working and are producing some wonderful textile products."

Teachers, support staff and parents are also given the opportunity to learn new skills such as weaving and textile techniques, this mean they are able to help and support the children. Once the products are ready the children will learn how to market and cost the products and then sell them.

These wonderful handmade items such as; purses, wallets, handbags, mobile phone cases, pencil cases, jewelry and key rings will be sold at a school craft fair, Bankfield Museum Shop and the Piece Hall, Halifax.

During the programme the school has been looking at different ways of exploring how to engage children in creative enterprise. Scott Parkin, Carr Green Teacher; "The project has been a resounding success from our point of view. The process of designing, resourcing, funding and collaboratively managing the project is such a rich and relevant experience for the children.

"The children always want to speak about what they have been doing or going to do and are very committed to the success of the enterprise element."

CapeUK is the delivery agency for the Creative Partnerships programme in West and South Yorkshire.

Carr Green, Headteacher, Mrs Bowyer recently received a wonderful gift from one of the students on the project, she says; "One pupil asked to measure my phone and the next thing I had been made a wonderful case for my mobile phone, made in colours to match the handset and hand stitched in my initials. The child had done it all in his own time, going out to buy the materials etc"

"We are planning to apply to be an Enquiry School again next year and would urge other schools to make the most of this fantastic opportunity."
