Penn Wood Nursery, Slough, Berkshire

Creative Junction - Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes

How can we make our parents inquisitive about their child’s learning so that conversations can take place?

A natural next step for Penn Wood School was to develop stronger links with home and the school. Parents will be at the centre of Penn Wood's project this year. The school wish to develop children’s talk, an important target in their SEF; raising attainment in the Communication Language and Literacy Development area of the Foundation curriculum. This also supports the work on Every Child a Talker, an initiative launched this year at Penn Wood school.

The creative partners are a play therapist and a drama therapist. Parents will also be invited to different activities with a view to working alongside their children. One of these first activity afternoons is a baked, gingerman story session, allowing parents/pupils to cook gingerbread as well as hearing the story.

This will support the work done in the food and shopping topic of the International Primary Curriculum. The Spring term will focus on Reception children and their parents. In the Summer term the project will move to Nursery. Parents will have an essential role in both projects. It is hoped that their increased engagement will be sustained and developed as their children move up the school.
