Find Your Talent North and South Tyneside Launched
14 May 2009
Area Delivery Organisation: The Customs House - North & South Tyneside
Find Your Talent, the new initiative designed to give children aged between 0 and 19 five hours of culture a week was launched on 23 September 2008 at the Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel.
A trumpet fanfare signaled the beginning of the ceremony at the pedestrian Tyne Tunnel and was followed by singing, a wave of noise, a ceremonial flag exchange by the Mayor of South Tyneside and the Chairman of North Tyneside Council and a pledge by two young children people representing North and South Tyneside.
The scheme which will run for three years will be managed by the Customs House, South Shields who were one of only 10 successful applications to become a ‘pathfinder’ from some 150 that were submitted.
The Customs House is the only ‘pathfinder’ north of Leeds and is charged with providing the programme to children in North and South Tyneside, although the first twelve months of the scheme will initially deal with schools in Jarrow and Seaton Burn.
Some 200 pupils from Seaton Burn College, Hazelwood School, Fordley Primary, Burradon Primary, Greenfields Primary, Jarrow School, Epinay Business and Enterprise School, Jarrow Cross Primary, Simonside and Bedeburn Primary Schools all took part in the ceremony.
Customs House Executive Director Ray Spencer said: “We are incredibly proud to be one of just ten ‘pathfinders’ for the Find Your Talent Scheme."
“The Customs House has always been committed to introducing young children to allsorts of exciting new activities and Find Your Talent enables us to continue our work on a new level.”
Trevor Jackson, TT2 (Tyne Tunnels 2) Managing Director, who are kindly supporting the event added: “We’re delighted to support this initiative.
“Our tunnels exist to connect the communities from north and south of the Tyne and its great to host an event that actively unites the young people from the area in such a positive way.
“I’m sure the Find Your Talent programme will go from strength to strength from this dynamic start”
