Dale Primary School, playground transformed into a 'field of gold'

Area Delivery Organisation: The Mighty Creatives

Katherine Clarke and Verity Jane Keefe from award winning art/architecture collective muf. have been working strategically with Dale for 3 years, to explore and test models for ideal creative learning environments. The creation of temporary & permanent interventions within the school has been characterized by strong research and development and an analytical methodology from planning through to evaluation. The partnership approach has been open and flexible, allowing for high levels of trust and recognition to flourish. The overall aim has been to identify potential structural or other changes that can maximise the quality of learning and teaching experiences within the school.

To date these interventions have included the remodelling of the school’s main entrance and its name sign; the renovation of the reception play space in to a Field of Gold - 10,000 yellow ribbons transform a dreary courtyard, a design brief for a piece of purpose build furniture to defeat clutter and a dedicated outside space for staff.

In addition staff have engaged in a programme of work that has taken them from their own community to that of another in Pistoia, Italy. Inspired by their unique approach to learning environments, groups of teachers, artists and heads made two separate research trips, to experience first hand the Pistoian approach to pedagogy. Working with eminent educationalist Dr Myra Barrs, Dale are now looking at new ways of delivering their curriculum, with a focus on reflective practice and the ‘Pedagogy of Slowness’.
