BBC Blast Hits Colchester
27 Nov 2009
Area Delivery Organisation: Creative Partnerships Haven Gateway
Young people in the Haven Gateway area got the opportunity to use their creativity when the BBC Blast Tour hit the town of Colchester this November.
Creative Partnerships Haven Gateway is working with BBC Blast to stage free workshops for 13-19 year olds. BBC Blast supports teenagers who want to start a career in music, dance, fashion, film, art or design.
The Blast Tour gives teenagers the opportunity to get some hands-on experience and training in a wide variety of free multi-media workshops. This was the first visit to the town for BBC Blast, who set up a mobile creative village, complete with digital workshop spaces, at Charter Hall, Colchester Leisure World, from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 November.
The Blast Advanced Truck offering taster workshop sessions was at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on 14 November when Colchester United took on Exeter City. All 13-19 year olds were welcome on the day and sampled the exciting workshops on offer.
Teenagers were able to experiment with professional equipment to produce their own work with help from leading industry professionals, including BBC production staff.
Workshops on offer included:
•Meet the Experts- Get top tips from music, arts and media professionals and learn how to get on in the industry.
•Multi-media - Work with Perrier Award winner Stuart Silver or artist facilitator Catherine Watling to explore ways of using video in performance; or learn how to produce your own online TV programme.
•Performance – Write and perform poetry with Luke Wright of Aisle 16; or create a pantomime with Colchester Mercury Theatre, learn about stage make up and hone your drama skills.
•Blast Portrait Competition - Create your own piece of album artwork under guidance from a professional portrait photographer.
•Music - drumming and percussion; Hip Hop music production; creating a film score.
A Blast Talent Showcase featured a selection of the work undertaken across the three days of workshops.
