Pop Up Science! – Newland School for Girls

Creative Partnerships Hull, Humber & North Yorkshire

Literacy has been identified as an area of whole school development at Newland School for Girls and is listed on the School Development Plan.

They also are looking to build their pupils’ confidence in their ability to acquire knowledge and in their communication skills by focusing on the idea of making their learning have ‘real’ relevance to and in the outside world.

Enquiry Question
How can we improve communication and literacy skills in our students through the use of graphic design and paper engineering?

Project Description
Newland School for Girls are keen to incorporate innovative approaches to literacy across the curriculum.

This project will focus on working with a class of Year 10 and Year 11 girls who are studying BTEC Applied Science exploring topic areas such as classification and health and social care.

Working with creative practitioner Mandy Keating who has graphic design, book making and marketing background, one of the objectives for the project is to make science be seen as relevant for pupils in the real world. The project will explore the enquiry question through the production of a pop up science book. The students will design and make a pop up science book based on the science topic area of, ‘health and social care.’ It is hoped that this would be an innovative way to capture the students’ imagination to explore science from a new and creative angle.

The aim is to excite and motivate pupils in the design and production of their books with the view to potentially promoting them within the publication market.

Project Outcomes:
During the project, the pupils will be encouraged to plan every aspect of their book as a potential saleable commodity, thus giving a real sense of ownership of their own learning with a relevance to the real world.

In tandem with this, they will also keep a project diary. They will use this as a way of reflecting on their learning and to enable them to make a personal record of the project through their thoughts and evaluations. The two science teachers involved will also make and keep their own reflective diaries.

It is hoped that the project will culminate in an exhibition of their work to try to incorporate the wider community.
