Big Art
7 May 2009
Area Delivery Organisation: Curious Minds – Lancashire, Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool
For the last three years Creative Partnerships Lancashire (Curious Minds) and Burnley Borough Council have been involved in a collaborative partnership with Channel 4 to develop the Big Art Project.
Selected in 2006 Burnley was one of seven sites to take part in a major experiment in commissioning public art by members of the public. In Burnley the responsibility was handed over to fifteen remarkable young people who have gone on an incredible journey of self-discovery and discovery about the meaning and relevance of art in the public realm. The result in Burnley was a series of installations by the world-renowned company Greyworld called 'Invisible' which was launched in February 2008.
The young people who commissioned the work illustrate how participation in cultural production builds social capital and how their enthusiasm, commitment and creativity offers real hope for the future.
The journey of the young people will be broadcast by Channel 4 over the next four weeks, starting this Sunday at 7pm. The programmes tell the story of the trials and tribulations, and the triumphs and transformations that resulted from the project.
We very much hope you will be able to tune in and witness how art can make a very real difference and tell a positive story about a town and community that is working hard to create a creative and cohesive future.
Channel 4, from Sunday 10th May at 7pm
