Zac’s Quest - students animate a series of films

Creative Partnerships Southampton, Portsmouth and Hampshire

Zac’s Quest is a Creative Partnerships, Southampton and Isle of Wight project where students at Downside Middle School on the Isle of Wight worked with a professional animator to create a series of short films.

The project's aim was to reflect on all the creativity and events that had happened at the school over the past year, using drama, story telling and film.

Students worked with teachers and animator Jamie Williams over a period of six weeks, splitting into groups to focus on specific creative projects from the last year, including Music, Drama & sports.

Storylines were developed through drama workshops, before students investigated animation; all the way from flip book to laptop! Finally, scripts had to be written and refined, storyboards drawn, props sourced and rehearsals run before filming.

The resulting short films, combining live action and animation, reflect the students’ experience of creative learning at the school and explored the filming process from research and refinement of ideas to use of equipment and collaboration with others.
