A Festival of Learning
8 Jul 2010
Area Delivery Organisation: The UK Centre for Carnival Arts - Luton and Bedford
The UK Centre for Carnival Arts was alive with the sound of learning at a festival celebrating this year's Creative Partnerships projects.
On 6 July 2010, more than 200 young people, teachers and project partners, all wearing wrist bands in true festival style, set up their stalls to share, shout about and show off their learning from the past year. The UKCCA Mas Camp buzzed with conversation and laughter as festival-goers found out what each other had been up to. The day, described as 'hectic and fantastic' by one of the teachers, kicked off with a mini-carnival parade showcasing some of the costumes made by pupils as part of their projects and there was a wealth of activities to try out, including pebble painting, weaving on wheels and giant junk modelling.
In the presentation zone there was an opportunity to see a collection of films made and presented by the pupils as well as a chance to visit ‘The Diary Room’ to answer questions such as: 'What’s the best idea you’ve had this week?'
The festival was broadcast live on radio, courtesy of Harrowden Middle School and Clever Atom who had been working in partnership on the project: HMS Transmission.
Although the event was all about celebrating the end of something - it was also an opportunity to be inspired about the future and as more than one teacher said on their way home, 'it's given me so many ideas'. We look forward to seeing those ideas and more come to life next year.
