Game up Event - Would Shakespeare write games?
5 Dec 2008
The 21st Century narrative landscape is changing with new communities of readers and writers emerging.
On Tuesday 2nd December, Channel 4 hosted a Reading Agency event in collaboration with Creative Partnerships to look at the creative interaction between reading, writing and gaming and explore young people’s relationships, experiences and interactions with gaming, narrative and co-production.
The lively debate saw contributions from panellists who included Alice Taylor, Commissioning Editor at Channel 4 Education; Cory Doctorow, writer, journalist and blogger; and Derek Robertson who is using games in Scottish schools to get pupils aged three to 18 excited about learning and education.
There was lots of enthusiasm for the rich, creative possibilities offered by the many layers and elements that make up games and the conclusion was that no other platform available now provides such opportunities. Hence the question, "if Shakespeare was around today, would he be writing games?"
The Reading Agency is carrying on the debate through its discussion forum. So join the debate and let us know - what games are you playing that tell great stories? In your opinion, what sort of games would Shakespeare be writing today? Visit www.readingagency.org.uk/discussion
A mini film from the event will be available soon, details to follow.
