:: NewsGilmar Ribeiro, g2 photography Where do ideas come from?Children from Easterside Primary School, Middlesbrough and Chapel Break First School, Norwich visited London to participate in a Philosophy for Children (P4C) enquiry with Dr Ashok Kumar MP. Maria Cornish and Sara Stanley of childrenthinking have been working with teachers and children as part of a year long programme at Easterside to embed creative thinking skills through P4C. The children, who were largely members of the Student Council, were invited to 1 Parliament Street following Dr Kumar's visit to Easterside school in February. After an exciting flight on the London Eye, the pupils aged between 6 and 11 walked across Westminster Bridge towards the Houses of Parliament and on to Whitehall where they met with the MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland. Norman Lamb MP for North Norfolk was also in attendance. The P4C method requires children to reason and explain their thinking, to listen and to build on the ideas of others. This happens within a Community of Enquiry in the classroom. In this case, children were asked to think about ideas and where they come from. They started to note down their thoughts and drawings before a challenging enquiry led by the children. 'I think ideas come from things around you which you see and then think 'what is that for?' and 'why is that there?'' 'Ideas come from something somebody has said' 'Ideas can't always come from your imagination' 'Is there a difference between an idea that comes from your brain and an idea that comes from your heart?' |
