NORTHUMBERLAND YOUNGSTERS ON THE BOX..

Pupils from three Northumberland schools are to make their debut on the small screen, thanks to a unique creative programme.

Youngsters from Astley High School, Seaton Delaval, Prudhoe High School and Bedlington's St Benet Biscop Catholic High School are part of a year-long 'Apprentice' style initiative, developed by Creative Partnerships Northumberland.

The young people are taking part in a number of creative tasks and activities throughout the duration of the scheme and have already worked with TV voice coaches David and Carrie Grant.

They have just taken part in their latest project, a residential weekend held at Ford Castle near Northumberland where the students worked on ideas for a summer school. And now they have come with a plan to put together an hour-long television programme which will be streamed live on the internet.

The magazine-style programme will include three 15 minutes pre recorded insets, one made by each school. St Benet Biscop is making a short 'rock school' feature in conjunction with North East Music Factory while Prudhoe High School will be working on a piece on an architectural theme. And Astley High School’s contribution will be to create a health and fitness programme which all the schools involved can use.

'Creative Partnerships Northumberland aims to show young people pathways through to employment and demystify the creative industries. The ‘Young Creatives’ programme is giving these youngsters a chance to get involved in live projects with real outcomes' said Sarah Rutherford, Creative Partnerships Northumberland Head of Programme.

'We are asking them to really put themselves and their ideas up for scrutiny and sell them to the group and to the professionals who are working with them. I have been amazed by the enthusiasm and resourcefulness of the students so far and expect their TV programme will be a winner.'

30 pupils from across the three schools are involved with the programme, chosen to represent a cross section of their year group. The project is designed to test the impact of creative opportunities in education and the organisers expect to see positive results in all the young participants.
