A Creative Partnerships Manchester Salford project - Manchester & Salford schools become hotbed for film making talent

Movie makers beware. Young producers and directors are grabbing a piece of the spotlight as the next generation of UK potential screen talent is nurtured in Manchester and Salford. Four secondary schools in the area are taking part in 'Eat the Pips', a film and media project enabling teachers and pupils to produce, distribute and promote their own short movies.

Creative Partnerships works to give school children throughout England the opportunity to develop their potential, their ambition, their creativity and imagination through sustainable partnerships with creative and cultural organizations, businesses and individuals.

Pupils will devise and create 90 second short films, exploring production, actor direction, script writing and technical processes. Behind the camera they will develop skills in marketing, distribution and exhibition. Teachers will also get involved, looking at ways of using film and media to teach topics in the national curriculum and gaining practical experience of movie making so they can apply it back at school. Both teachers and pupils will receive a DVD copy of the films they have produced.

Nancy Barrett, Creative Director, Creative Partnerships Manchester Salford, says: 'Eat the Pips is about using film and media to sow the seed of creativity and develop the potential and ambition of young people and their teachers. The project was inspired by an earlier, hugely successful Creative Partnerships project where students from Wentworth High School worked with Cornerhouse to create their own German Film Festival. By joining in with all aspects of managing the event, pupils developed their skills and confidence across a range of curriculum subjects and the project is proving to be a really effective learning model.'
