Pupils taking part in The Pen Project
MLA West Midlands

Synopsis

Working with Jenny Salter, our Creative Learning Officer at MLA West Midlands, children from new associate school Princethorpe Junior School worked with the Pen Museum, staffed by volunteers, to help them to develop their learning programme. Through exploring the collection alongside storytellers, writers and museum staff the children made a series of creative responses to it such as book making, storymaking and designing new branding. They presented the outcomes to parents and children at an assembly and presented the Lord Mayor with a collection of their books.

1. Project aims (click a heading to expand)

:: The project concept

Continuing our collaborative working with the MLA to test ways of developing creative learning in museums and libraries

:: Ambitions

Through pupil tracking, teachers reported improved levels of imaginative writing

This pilot project has begun the debate on the role of culture within learning for the school and better ways of working with schools and young people for the museum

There are plans to build on this project by following the pilot programme with continued collaboration between the Pen Museum and the school, focussing more explicitly on how it can support the development of literacy skills
